Fiyero would consider himself well traveled, having been all sorts of places all across Oz. But he's never crossed the Impassable Deserts, what with them being impassable and all. Until now, that is.
In an effort to find Elphaba, Fiyero had convinced the Wizard to let him borrow the balloon to float across Oz, scouting for her. In truth, he knew the flying monkeys would do a much better job of this than he ever could. His hope was instead that Elphaba might spot him and come to him.
And then a storm had overtaken him, and it was all Fiyero could do just to hang on and not be thrown out of the basket. It was impossible to tell even which direction he was flying. All he knew is that once it calmed enough for him to look down and see more than just storm clouds, he didn't recognise the world below him.
He's floating over a massive, shining city - similar to the Emerald City, but far more outstretched, and all glass and silver as opposed to the green he's used to. It's late at night and he's probably not very visible from the ground, but the city is lit up by a million twinkling lights. It's quite beautiful, actually.
He floats by a giant clock - curiously noticing it has only 12 numbers on it - descending towards a giant river. He's not altogether excited about landing in the water, but at least it'll be a soft landing...
Except he's moving horizontally much quicker than he's moving vertically, and -- there's a sudden jolt and Fiyero has to grab the edge of the basket to not fall over, as the balloon catches on a bridge. Where he's now just sort of ... dangling.
There isn't anything that goes on in the sky that doesn't go unnoticed by someone somewhere. But there's something temporal going on when the little balloon dances its way across the night sky and most pieces of technology see it simply as a 'blip', there and gone in a moment and is simply regarded as 'glitch' when further investigation renders it unrepeatable.
But not everyone who is watching the nights sky breezes past a 'glitch'.
UNIT was oh so used to sorting through the readings, and the cameras, and the scattering of reports of something strange. Most of the time it was people spewing nonsense but every now and then there seems to be some truth on hot air balloons dancing across the sky with strange writings on them.
Reports had been somewhat inconsistent but one general consensus was that it had the word 'Omaha' dashed across the side, which Luke was fairly certain was a city in America. Which was admittedly bizarre but not as bizarre as other things he had experienced throughout his shorter time in this world. So now in the middle of the night he gets the usual call, something about a temporal tear and some sort of air ship? Which admittedly wasn't the first time that had happened, but regardless he tidies up and heads off into the cool night to where the various reports have sort of agreed the 'blip' had been. Having honestly no idea just how long it will take or what exactly he will find when he does.
His job at UNIT wasn't very action packed but it was certainly interesting.
After making sure the whole thing wasn't going to just topple into the river, and dusting his uniform off a bit, Fiyero is now standing in the slightly crooked basket, contemplating his options.
He could jump into the river. It's slow moving and not that far to the bank, so it would hardly be dangerous. He'd just... rather not.
But looking up, that doesn't seem to be much of an option either. The balloon has snagged on something and possibly punctured a bit... at least it seems to be slowly deflating. The basket gives an ominous lurch. It's not that far up to the rather large bridge, but there's not really anything he can hold onto if he tries to climb the outside of the balloon.
"Hello?" he calls hopefully up to the bridge. It's quiet and seemingly the middle of the night, but surely someone must be around? "Anyone there? Don't suppose someone could lend me a hand? ...Anyone?"
Oh it is best that the other actively determines that he shouldn't jump if only because the water option is not very appealing given the weather and the fact that you'd be soaked to the bone in what is quite the heavy outfit.
But that water is gnarly and there might be a few things living in it that are also not quite from this world.
It's a blessing and a curse that the night is quiet out and around in the city. It means that Luke is easily able to park the old bright yellow bug he'd been giving from his mum relatively close to where he needed to be which would likely work in his favour once he caught wind of the situation at hand. It wasn't long before his slow wandering looking for anything out of place paid off. Of course he had't been expecting it to come from underneath him and he hadn't expected the voice to sound exceedingly British great another wasted night with a nutter.
At least he can claim the whole right place right time as the other is in a bit of a predicament. "Are you alright!?" He hollers first figuring if he needs to call for an ambulance he might as well do it now as they are right in the thick of the city and it could be a while before anyone gets out to them, even if the place is quiet for now. "Are you hurt?"
"Oh, thank Oz," Fiyero mumbles to himself as someone finally answers. "I'm fine!" he calls back. Relatively, anyway. He's bound to have a few bruises from being jostled about for however long that storm lasted.
"Could do with a bit of a hand though. Don't suppose you've got a rope or something you could toss down?"
"You have a great bring balloon and no rope? What exactly was your end goal when you were going to properly land?!" He only says that because he's really not sure he has one. The bug has a lot of things but it isn't as though he does a lot of spelunking admittedly.
He gives the other a moment to make sure that he doesn't have anything of that nature in the basket of his current ride, but he wont take too long because something about this situation seems like time might be a factor.
Come to think of it. Yeah. Of course there's some rope here, the ones that's used for securing the balloon in place. "One moment," he yells up as he grabs and uncoils it a little.
Not too long after, a rope suddenly swings up on the bridge, deftly thrown from below. "Could you tie that to something?"
So critical thinking may not be this guys greatest skill, which is fair considering the circumstances and all. He's thankful for the fact that he does find a rope because it makes this situation a hell of a lot easier, not to say it's easy at all. He's quick to grab the rope and while he isn't really one of UNITs soldiers there had been a fair amount of basics required to learn to join up.
Which means he can tie up a pretty decent knot to the side of one of the runs in the fence keeping people from the Thames and the timing couldn't be better because there is a very distinct sound of fabric tearing it would seem the older material of the balloon having a hard time with the stress of being draped over the bridge.
Which is so not good.
"Quickly now! I'm not sure how much longer we have!" The good news is even if the balloon does end up in the water someone from UNIT is bound to fetch it up and keep it 'safe' for the other. The bad news is if they don't get him out of there they might be fishing him out too and Luke can't swim so... "Hang tight mate, we'll get you out of there!" He's a little hard to see admittedly so he's not sure how easily this is going to be, the good news is despite his lithe frame he's a lot stronger than he looks and he's a master of physics, he moves to swing the rope around a lamp post and then around one of the runs of the railings. With haste he fashions himself a couple of knots for grip ad a tight loop for later.
There's another threatening jostle, and whoever's up top probably has a point about them having limited time. There's not much he can do from down here though, so he just has to wait.
Thankfully the guy's giving him reassurance, which is quite nice actually. "Always appreciate a hype squad," he calls up, partly just to let him know that Fiyero's not like panicking or anything.
And then he asks about a hold, and Fiyero gives the rope a tug to check. "Good to go!" he yells back after grabbing hold with both arms and legs - though he doesn't actually expect one guy to try to pull him up, so he starts climbing on his own, only to be surprised when the rope suddenly shifts. Well. Fiyero may be athletic, but he's also pretty exhausted from hanging on through a storm, so he's not going to complain.
He is likely not the best at reassuring. Mostly he 'tells it how it is' but in this case he can be a little bit hopeful because there's two options. Drop or not. He's not about to let the other drop.
But Hype Squad is a new one.
Any assistance will be helpful but the good news is he's made light work with the pulley system he's rigged up. Making light work pulling the other, within just a few minutes he at least has him up and over the rail of the bridge grabbing a hold of the other and using a last good push to pull him at least to the safety of the side walk.
The other is entirely not what he was expecting. His outfit is both normal and strange all at once. He looks like he's about to lead a parade not dangle off bridges in the middle of the night. He is careful to extend his hand in greeting and allows the other to either accept or not, he's not entirely sure customs in this persons world. Though he does't look entirely dissimilar to himself.
"I shall get a team out to recover your, 'vehicle'. But in the meantime are you alright?"
Fiyero's relieved to finally be on solid ground as he climbs over the rail with assistance from the other man, landing with relative smoothness on the sidewalk. He takes a second to straighten his clothes and toss his hair back a little. He's a bit dishevelled still, but he has a way of making that work in his favour.
He was expecting someone a bit less skinny, with the way he helped Fiyero pull him up, but he grins warmly in greeting, taking his hand and giving it a friendly shake. He always tries to make a good first impression.
"More or less, yes. Thank you so much," he answers. "I'm Fiyero Tigelaar. And I'm also afraid I'm a bit lost."
