There we go, Fiyero is technically cooking for Kitty. That can be his thanks. Well, probably one of many thanks.
"We have fizzy drinks," he answers around a mouthful of poptart, which he devoured quickly, now licking his fingers but this time only because of the sugar. He picks up the bottle again, looking at the name before tasting it again. It's pretty decent, once he expects the bubbles. "But mostly alcoholic ones. Like gillijuice, which is kinda like if you mix this with wine."
Kitty eats his Pop Tart half slower than Fiyero but he's also not really hungry, just kind of eating it for the taste.
"Gillijuice sounds... unappealing? But we have a whole heap of fizzy drinks, sodas, of all kinds of flavours that aren't alcoholic. We have a bunch of different ones in the fridge or cupboards, so you can taste a bunch of them to see if there's any you like more than others." He smiles. "We can have alcohol here but we keep it in our own rooms because of the kids, who I'm sure you'll meet a bunch of tomorrow."
Fiyero gives a shrug at Gillijuice - it's kind of like champagne, but he hasn't tried that yet so he doesn't know to compare.
"Makes sense. And of course I've gotten to try a few of the alcoholic ones too. Thank you for that, by the way," he says with a smile, since it occurs to him he didn't explicitly thank him for the drinks. He grabs the other poptart from the toaster, which is already only kind of warm, then nods in the direction of the door, wordlessly suggesting they head back to the rooms and starts heading that way. He wants to take a shower too. (It doesn't occur to him to clean up after using the kitchen.)
There’s not too much of a mess so Kitty just pushes the toaster to the back of the counter -it’ll likely be used in the morning anyway- and follows Fiyero out and back up the hallway.
“I was thinking tomorrow we start with some of the staples for your wardrobe and then hit a grocery store, see if there’s anything in particular food wise you wanna try? Once we’ve got an idea of your size and preferences, we can order stuff online too.”
of course Kitty wants to know Fiyero's size and preferences-- i mean
Fiyero frowns in confusion at Kitty for a few moments before his brain connects the dots. "Oh, my clothes size, not my food size, alright," he replies with an obvious realisation.
"Well, I'm probably more picky with the clothes than the food. I'll eat anything." He says appropriately as he keeps munching on the poptart. "OH, I just had pizza for the first time the other day! Amazing. You guys are geniuses."
"Sorry, yeah. Clothes size. I think we should focus on a pair of jeans or two, some sweats, plain t-shirts and maybe some button ups? And sweaters. And you definitely need a proper winter coat." Glancing down at Fiyero's boots, he clicks his tongue. "Also probably some winter boots and some slippers for comfiness around the Mansion."
Kitty had already made a list in his head of all the different things they should focus on and the best places to visit. "That is good to know.
"We can even get some oven baked pizzas to keep in the freezer for you. We probably have some but you can pick some flavours that jump out at you. Oh, we can also get some delivered from this really nice pizza place. They're serve kosher so I can eat whatever they have."
Fiyero has to restrain himself from clucking again. He's used to people fawning over him, or trying to appease him, or even following his orders - this conversation might even be reminiscent of something he's had with a stylist or something. But there's such an obvious difference in motivation. Kitty doesn't seem like he's trying to impress Fiyero or get anything out of him. He's really just making sure Fiyero is looked after.
"What's kosher?" Fiyero asks, assuming it's some sort of type of pizza or other meal.
"Do you have preferences on anything? Colours, materials, etcetera." Just because he was wearing green and gold now didn't mean that was his preference and just because he didn't know what jeans were before, doesn't mean he didn't have an idea of what he actually did like. Sure there were things Kitty would be introducing him to, but if there was anything Fiyero knew he wanted, that would make things a little easier.
"Oh, Kosher is what we call food that complies with Jewish dietary law. I'm Jewish, descended from Ashkenazi Jews. I keep kosher to a point. I don't eat pig products or shellfish and a few other things. But I don't keep completely kosher."
"Usually wear blue. And just, you know... Flattering stuff? On the fancier end of things?" he answers thoughtfully. He doesn't need it to be expensive per se - just when it comes to style. He likes to look good.
The explanation of kosher and 'Jewish' is mostly confusing and unfamiliar, but he does gather its a cultural thing related to food and stuff he can't eat. Which seems fair enough. Fiyero feels weird about certain types of meat himself.
"Alright, I can work with blue. Not sure how we'll go with finding fancier stuff that matches your current aesthetic. Most people dress pretty casual but we'll see what we can find. I think button ups are definitely going to be more your vibe than basic t-shirts though. But it'll be worth having some for lazing around here."
Kitty could probably explain it better but explaining Judaism and what it means to him is a deeper conversation than what he's willing to go into right now. Maybe another day though. "Is there anything you don't want to eat? Like, how does it work with the difference between Animals and animals? Because we can definitely look at vegetarian options for you."
"Well, it doesn't have to have all the...." Fiyero comments, finishing the sentence by vaguely waggling his fingers at his chest and shoulders, to indicate the ridiculous amounts of detailing on the jackets he's not even wearing right now. His current look, right this moment, is a lot simpler.
Fiyero is also far too sleepy to absorb any sort of conversation about faith, especially lacking as much basic knowledge as he is on the topic. He has heard people mention God, and that's about as far as he's gotten.
"Well, we eat some meat, but I guess it's more rare than it is here?" he answers, or at least that's the impression he's gotten. "Fish is fine. I mean, you can't expect a Wolf to live off fruits."
"I'll just pick some stores and you can choose." He also had to remember to talk to Charles about what they could do for ID for him. He could get away without a Social Security card because he could easily pass as an Englishman, but they still needed something.
"Okay, well, we can look at the grocery store and you can see what sounds alright to you. We have a lot of different fish to choose from. And there's red meat like beef and lamb or white meat like chicken. Whatever you feel comfortable with, I guess. Also, I'd assume any feline Animals would need meat. I can't imagine they're suddenly vegetarian just because it's a different world."
Fiyero is already kind of wrinkling his nose as a few of the animals Kitty is mentioning. Even though they're obviously animals, not Animals.
"Maybe stick with mostly vegetarian and fish," he suggests. They can hash out the details later. "That's what I'm mostly used to. I mean, I know it's fine, it's not a big deal if something has meat, it's just... kind of weird, I guess," he answers, running a hand through his hair.
"So pescatarian, easy. How do you feel about milk and eggs? Because we have plant-based milk if cows milk is not to your taste and there's often egg substitutes. But it means checking packaging to ensure you're not eating things you don't want to." And if it feels like Kitty is asking a lot of questions, it's because he really cares about these kinds of things and there's also the fact that he has no idea if eating things he's never eaten before might make him sick.
"No judgement from me. I may not eat completely kosher but the things I do, I take really seriously."
Fiyero squints at Kitty mentioning milk at first, but then he clarifies cow's milk. Could've been human milk, for all Fiyero knows. "That's fine, I guess?" he answers with a shrug. "I've had eggs. Not much milk, but it doesn't bother me." Conceptually, at least.
Some of it, he's honestly not sure how he feels until he's tried it. "I mean, it's really all fine, since you don't have Animals here. I'm good with anything," he lies casually.
Even strolling along slowly, their conversation has taken them back to their rooms, though Fiyero leans against the wall rather than head inside immediately.
"Okay, well, maybe we can look at starting with cow's milk and if that doesn't feel right, we can try some of the others." Really, none of this needs to be planned right now. It's stupid o'clock at night - Kitty actually has no idea what the time is - and they've both had a big night and he's honestly rather tired, ready for a shower and to collapse into bed. He's just gotten stuck on making sure that the things Fiyero wants and needs are available to him in order to make sure he's comfortable, the same way he would with any of the new kids that come through with little to their name.
Only he finds himself getting lost in Fiyero's ridiculous blue eyes and stunning smile whenever he aims it at him and he really needs to get that under control.
"Sorry. I'm probably overwhelming you. I just get the idea in my head and... I just want to make sure you have what you need. There is a reason I'm called a Mother Hen all the time."
Fiyero gives Kitty a warm smile at his apology - it's definitely edging towards a sleepy kind of smile, rather than the bright perky one he's been using so far.
"You know 'Prince' is just a title right? I don't need to be pampered, I'm fine with just going with the flow, not stressing about stuff like that," he says, somewhere between reassurance and masking the underlying terror at being in a new world all on his own. "I mean, not that I mind a bit of pampering," he adds playfully, continuing to smooth stuff over with humour, as he pushes off from the wall and opens the door to his room.
“I remember when I came here. I was terrified. And I came from Illinois, not some alternate world.” Not that Fiyero had said he was afraid and, even if he was, Kitty didn’t expect him to admit it. While he’d definitely figured out that Fiyero masked his real feelings with humour, he also realised that he was pretty good at hiding the truth.
“I just try to be the person I had, to make it a little easier.” Kitty offers his own soft small, as if to say ‘it’s okay if you’re not okay’ without actually saying the words. “Goodnight Fiyero. You know where I am if you need anything.”
Fiyero's face may not betray very much, but the smile does have a little bit more of an affectionate and grateful look to it than just the charming playfulness. Though that's also the only acknowledgement he gives. Kitty's made it a lot easier, not just a little, but there's only so much gratitude Fiyero can show without admitting how lost he felt to begin with.
"I think I can find it without getting lost," Fiyero affirms. "I'll see you tomorrow." He gives Kitty a friendly clap on the shoulder, then heads inside - before pausing in the doorway. "And don't get too worried if it takes a while. I usually sleep in." He grins, still all sparkle and charm and humour, despite everything.
Kitty smiles softly at him and steps backwards towards his own bedroom door. As long as Fiyero remembers which side Kitty's room is on, he'll be fine. His bedroom is stocked with the essentials, like towels and body wash so he should be fine.
"Unless there's an emergency, I will also be sleeping in." And with one last smile, Kitty phases through his bedroom door and disappears into his room.
Fiyero watches Kitty head to his door, and he's glad he did, because that's definitely an unusual sight. Well, he clearly wasn't lying. That's... something.
"Now that's just showing off!" Fiyero says (or yells) after him, hopefully loud enough that Kitty can hear it. It doesn't occur to him just now that maybe there are people in some of these other rooms who can also hear it while they're trying to sleep.
He closes the door behind him finally, leaning against it and closing his eyes, and he lets out a long sigh. He's exhausted, but for the first time since he got here, there's a little less of a knot in his chest. He takes a long, warm shower, and after that he pretty much passes out as soon as he hits the pillow.
